HOW TO CHOOSE A TEACHER
Submitted by Joyce Parsons, (former keeper of the Tai Chi Directory List)
602-331-8282
senior practitioner, Student of Master Jinheng
Li
First, decide what you want from Tai Chi. Some students are solely interested
in
the health benefits of relaxation, balance, joint functions, flexibility and
focus to
keep oneself functioning as one ages. The martial art aspect of T’ai Chi is
of no
interest. However, by understanding the applications for self defense many
find it
helps them to remember the form, and it may also come in handy. It is
advisable
to get a teacher who knows the application even though they focus on the
health
which includes breathing and meditation.
If you choose to go in depth and be a dedicated Tai Chi practioner, look for a
well balanced program. The following guide lines have been condensed from the
"T’AI CHI" magazine, Vol. 22, #6, by David X. Swenson, Ph. D. Guidelines not
in
quote are a combination of my interpretation of the article; my learning from
studying T’ai Chi literature and experience from workshops and classes.
1. Lineage: In China, there are no diplomas. The competency of the teacher is
judged by the quality of the teacher’s training, and how long the association
was
or is with the Master instructing the teacher in question. "T’ai Chi, unlike
many
other martial arts, does not commonly have a belt ranking system where the
famous black belt indicates anything more than a sincere student. Likewise,
there
is no certification, graduation transcript, or tiger-dragon burn scars on the
forearms to indicate expertise." The West is introducing the certificates, as
this is
how it is done here. However, even here, the certificate does not guarantee
quality.
2. "Mastery: T’ai Chi is a complete system of health and self-defense and has
many
complex components to it. A person who has learned the complete system over
several years should probably be able to demonstrate a short or long solo form
(24 to 105-plus postures) and forms with a staff, Chinese straight sword and
broad sword. In addition, he/she should be able to demonstrate ch’i gung
exercises, and meditative postures and procedures. Finally, the teacher
should be
able to discuss and explain the T’ai Chi classics, principles of movement and
related philosophical texts." Meditation, breathing and self-defense are
integral
parts of T’ai Chi.
No matter what your motivation or goal is, the following guidelines apply:
1 "Personal ethics: Legitimate teachers earn students’ respect because they
are
respectful of the students. They are not abusive, degrading, punishing and do
not
take advantage of them ."
2 Stability with innovation: There are many styles originating from the Chen
style,
*"but they were then adapted to personal preferences, body styles and
circumstances of new masters. The point here is that good teachers are
continually studying their styles and evolving them, making them better. For
beginners, it may be best to find a teacher who is not in the midst of
revising the
form or style at the time." Some styles as T’ai Chi Chih are an exercise
system, not
requiring memorizing a sequence or as challenging as learning the form. Many
of
the benefits of T’ai Chi Chuan are still realized in Tai Chi Chih.
3 Ask to visit a class before signing up to determine if it is what you want.
4 Does instructor have a positive attitude and speak well of others.
5 Does instructor *‘practice what he/she preaches.’
6 Judge on overall program, not just on "powers" the instructor displays.
7 "Formality-Informality: T’ai Chi is taught in many different ways. My only
caution here is not to confuse the ‘politics and appearances’ of a formal
setting as
a substitute for sound instruction."
Have fun...JP
